Golf Champions Proves Serious Gamble for Some Fans

The PGA Tour's season-ending event, the Tour Championship, is held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. The course was designed by Tom Bendelow and opened for play on September 14, 1913. It was home to the Atlanta Athletic Club until 1924. The club relocated to Druid Hills and the course was leased to a group of investors.

East Lake has hosted multiple Tour Championships including in 1963, when it was the first event ever televised live coast-to-coast in the United States. In 1974, Hale Irwin won the first of his three Tour Championships at East Lake.

The club was purchased by Coca-Cola heir George W. Watts in 1976 and he gave the course and clubhouse to Turner Broadcasting System founder Ted Turner to use as part of an ambitious inner-city development project called "Town Village" which included building of low income housing, churches and schools.

The East Lake Golf Club remained open to the public while under Turner's ownership, but was eventually closed for renovation after he sold it in 1997. It reopened in 2001 after restoration by architect Rees Jones. The golf course underwent another restoration between 2007 and 2009 which restored many of the features that were lost over time. As part of this restoration, several tees were added and others moved back to their original locations, bunkers were restored and a new irrigation system was installed.

It is currently a private club with memberships available by invitation only. The club hosted the 2015 TOUR Championship, won by Jordan Spieth.

Spieth started Sunday's final round tied for 3rd place but birdied six holes on the front nine , including Nos . 2 , 3 , 5 and 7 , to take control of the tournament . He finished with a 3 -under 69 final round score for a total winning margin of three strokes over Matt Kuchar . Oddsmakers had Spieth listed as an 8 / 1 favorite prior to last week's competition . PGA Championship (August 10-13) - Held this year at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte , North Carolina , Justin Thomas captured his first major championship with a two stroke victory over Francesco Molinari . Entering Sunday's final round with a two stroke lead , Thomas shot a bogey free 5 -under 67 par scorecard to finish at 10 -under 270 for 72 holes . Oddsmakers prior to last week's competition had Thomas listed as 25 / 1 shot to win this year ' s PGA Championship .
